Mi reaccion inmediata al alquimista no fue nada negativa. El trama es bastante interesante y obliga que el lector se quede pegado al libro. Aunque con un nivel de magia y calidad un poco menor, El Alquimista me recordo mucho de uno de mis libros favoritos (el primer libro que me lei), El Principito por Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Ambos libros tienen un elemento que agarra al lector, y hace que uno se identifique fanaticamente con el protagonista. En el caso de El Alquimista, al igual que Santiago, todos hemos tenido una voz aventurera que quiere explorar el mundo... no acostumbrarse a la monotonia de la vida cotidiana, y explorar. De manera similar tambien me podia relacionar con el (bastante cursi) mensaje de 'seize the day' que es presente durante lo largo del cuento.
Dicho esto, El Principito es un libro que busca a una audiencia infantil. El Alquimista esta en un rango similar. El mensaje de "carpe diem" fue agotado durante largas clases en la escuela elemental, y como obra literaria me parece que no es lo suficiente sofisticado para ser tratodo con mucha seriedad. Por otra parte esto no quiere decir que no me haya gustado, por lo contrario, disfrute inmensamente leerlo (y saber que al mismo tiempo estaba haciendo mi tarea).

It's funny that you mention the Little Prince, I hadn't thought of that, but it's true - there are lots of parallels. I read The little prince probably around the age of 15, and the Alchemist just this past summer, upon the flowering recommendations of several aquaintances. I'm not sure why, but I loved the former and thought the latter did not live up to its reputation (this was before I took this class). Maybe it has to do with age - I might have related better with Santiago when I was stuck living at home, yearning for freedom. Or maybe it has to do with expectations - I was forced to read "The Little Prince", a classic, by my parents, and lo and behold, it turned out to be really good; whereas I expected a great novel from "The Alchemist" but it turned out to be not bad, but just as not exceptional as the hype about it suggests. Moral of the story - read for yourself and find out...
